As I wrote just a few days ago, it's another fascinating case of Chinese indie games exploding onto Steam and often beating out big-budget releases from major North American or European developers. It's cool to see, but Tale of Immortal is currently only available in Simplified Chinese, which makes it tough to play if you don't know the language. It's on the vanguard of a new subgenre of RPG popular in China called "cultivation sims," which are open-world sandbox RPGs set in the incredibly popular "xianxia" genre of Chinese fiction. The gist is simple: Through training, meditation, and adventuring, you ascend from being a mere mortal to divine godhood.

Charming life sim Chinese Parents and complex martial arts RPG The Scroll of Taiwu both topped Steam's global best seller list in 2018, with the latter quickly selling over 1 million copies in just a few months.

Each one beat out notable big-budget releases to top Steam's best sellers list and has tens of thousands of positive user reviews.

Where Tale of Immortal stands out, however, is that it’s currently only available on Valve’s store in Simplified Chinese, meaning many of these players are from China itself. This is the second Chinese-language game to make a splash on Steam this month, following strategy game House of the Three Kingdoms 8, which topped at around 25,000 players a couple of weeks ago. But what separates the two is Tale of Immortal is available everywhere, whereas Three Kingdoms 8 is China-only. Industry analyst Daniel Ahmad points out that China now accounts for a quarter of Steam’s users, and the success of both games goes against the general buying habits for Chinese players.

With its tile-based 2D world aesthetic and a single language option of Simplified Chinese, Tale of Immortal might seem like an incredibly unlikely game to have debuted as the fifth most popular game on Steam. User reviews are overwhelmingly positive though, as the combination of Chinese mythology, vibrant monster-slaying action, and a low price has resulted in a smash-hit debut.

仅凭借2D画面和简体中文这一单一语言选项这两点，《鬼谷八荒》似乎是一个极不可能进入Steam畅销榜前五的游戏。但是游戏有着中国神话主题和精彩的打斗动作，加上相对低的价格，获得了来自玩家的特别好评。

This can also be chalked up to Steam's current presence in China, which now has over 30 million players on the platform who regularly flock towards similar games such as Amazing Cultivation Simulator and other Chinese-produced indie games that celebrate the culture of the country. Steam still has plans for a more official launch in China this year, as the platform currently exists as more of a grey market for users on that side of the world.
